Hiring Movers: Tips For First-Timers

If you've managed to DIY all of your moves so far, hiring professional movers might feel like unfamiliar territory this time around. It's not that hard, and there are plenty of great moving companies out there that can take a huge burden off your plate. But still, there are a few tips you'll want to follow when hiring movers.

Get Written Estimates

Moving estimates are often pretty detailed. They often list off an hourly quote, a cost for per-hour services, extra fees for things like packing or renting dollies, and so forth. By the time you get a few different estimates, you may struggle to remember which one is which. So, make sure you get written copies of any estimates you request. This way, you can easily put them side by side and compare them before choosing a company to hire.

Ask About Insurance

Most moving companies offer insurance, assuring you that they'll pay for any items that are damaged during the move. But not all moving insurance policies are the same. They may have different maximum coverages. Some policies may only reimburse you up to a certain amount per item. So, when you get quotes from various moving companies, make sure you ask about their insurance policies so you can compare them and choose a company that offers the coverage you're comfortable with.

Don't Assume You'll Need to Pack Yourself

People often pack their own things rather than letting movers do it as a way of saving money on their move. However, some moving companies offer packing services more affordably than you might think. So, it is worth getting quotes for packing services so you can at least consider the real cost before deciding whether you'll do your own packing.

Ask About Dates Upfront

As soon as you know what dates you need to move or would prefer to move, let moving companies know. If you can give them preferred dates before they even give you an estimate, they may be able to give you a more accurate estimate. Or, they may tell you that they're already booked for those dates, saving you the hassle of getting an estimate from a company you never would have been able to hire in the first place.

People hire movers every day in the U.S. It's not terribly difficult, but there are some strategies and tips to keep in mind throughout the process.
